Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Your tattoo is an investment, and proper aftercare is essential for the best possible healing and long-term results. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Step 1

Leave Your Second Skin On

Leave your Second Skin bandage in place for 3–5 days, unless otherwise instructed by your artist. It is normal to see excess ink, blood, and plasma collect beneath the bandage. Do not remove it early unless it becomes compromised — lifting significantly, leaking, or exposing the tattoo.

Step 2

Remove the Bandage

Remove the Second Skin in a warm shower. Slowly peel the bandage back over itself rather than pulling straight away from the skin to minimize irritation.

Step 3

Wash Your Tattoo

Gently wash your tattoo using warm water and an antibacterial, fragrance-free soap such as Gold Dial Antibacterial Hand Soap. Use only your clean hands — never washcloths, loofahs, or sponges. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry. Do not rub the area.

Step 4

Let It Dry Naturally

After your first wash, do not apply any lotion or ointment for the next 12–24 hours. Allowing the tattoo to dry naturally helps the skin begin the healing process. Keep it clean and avoid unnecessary contact with clothing or dirty surfaces.

Step 5

Begin Moisturizing

After the drying period, wash your tattoo again with antibacterial soap, wash your hands thoroughly, and apply a thin layer of a fragrance-free, non-petroleum-based moisturizer such as Hustle Butter, Lubriderm Fragrance Free, Cetaphil, or CeraVe. Avoid petroleum-based products like Vaseline, Aquaphor, or A&D Ointment — they can trap moisture and slow healing.

Step 6

Less Is More

Your tattoo should never look greasy or heavily coated. Apply only enough moisturizer to eliminate excessive dryness. Dryness, flaking, and light peeling are normal. Do not pick or scratch — let the skin come off naturally so the ink stays crisp.

Step 7

Protect Your Tattoo

Until fully healed, avoid swimming, hot tubs, lakes, and prolonged soaking. Keep it out of direct sun. Wear clean, loose clothing whenever possible. Once healed, always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to preserve detail, contrast, and longevity.
